Tony Scannell returns to our screens on Sunday, January 7, in Waking the Dead.
The Irish-born thespian remains best-known as Detective Sergeant Ted Roach in The Bill.
He played the role for on-and-off for 16 years.
His debut was on October 23, 1984, in an edition entitled A Friend in Need.
Wren Boys is the first in a new series of the popular BBC crime drama.
Tony will be seen alongside regulars Trevor Eve, Sue Johnston and Wil Johnson as a character called Papa McDonagh.
Johnston famously starred as Sheila Corkhill in Brookside.
Between 1997 and 1999, the actor featured in the ill-fated soap Family Affairs.
He played Eddie Harris.
His other screen credits include The Gentle Touch, The Professionals, The Things You Do for Love and the movie Flash Gordon.
